How to install steamos in virtualbox

SteamOS has finally dropped in all its beta glory. While 300 lucky preview testers scored Steam hardware as well, most of united states have to install information technology on our ain machines if nosotros want to try it out. Hither's how to do that.

Before we begin, at that place are some very important caveats:

  • This will wipe your auto. Due to the way Valve has distributed this image, you lot cannot partition a difficult drive or dual kicking it with your existing ready upwards. This is a recovery image and your partition table volition be wiped clean if y'all attempt to install it on the same hard drive. If you want to play around with information technology in a not-subversive manner, yous can try it in a virtual auto. One time y'all take SteamOS installed, you can create a new Windows partition, but this will wipe your existing setup.
  • This may wipe your secondary hard drives, as well. The basic method is not optimised for installing on systems with multiple drives. Depending on how your boot tables are prepare, you might inadvertently lose information on your other drives likewise. Keep condom and remove all difficult drives except the ane you want to install SteamOS on.
  • You'll need an NVIDIA graphics card. Sorry AMD users. Support is reportedly coming in the hereafter, but for now if you don't have an NVIDIA graphics carte, you'll accept to sit this one out.

What You lot'll Need

How to install steamos in virtualbox

Before you get started, here'due south what you'll need to download and/or collect:

  • The SteamOS Installer (Here's an unofficial torrent)
  • A 4GB or larger USB stick
  • A Motherboard with UEFI support

There are 2 main means to install SteamOS, and the method you choose will decide which download yous need. The easiest method involves flashing a recovery disc image and that download is near ii.4GB (called "SYSRESTORE.nix" at the link in a higher place). The slightly more complicated method which has all the fun expert buttons is most 960MB and labelled "SteamOSInstaller.nil".

Method #ane: The Easy Fashion

How to install steamos in virtualbox

The simplest method to become SteamOS upward and running is to install the recovery image. Over again, as a reminder, this method will completely erase your entire hard drive regardless of segmentation. Equally long as you lot're prepared for that, here's what to exercise:

  1. Format the USB stick to FAT32. Proper name it "SYSRESTORE".
  2. Unzip SYSRESTORE.zip and identify its contents on the USB drive.
  3. Boot your machine from the USB stick.
  4. While booting, select the UEFI entry from the boot bill of fare.
  5. Select "Restore Entire Disk".

This method will result in a complete, ready-to-apply SteamOS installation being created on your machine. If you lot want to dual kick SteamOS with a Windows installation, y'all tin ready that upwardly now. While the SteamOS release is based on Debian, our guide to dual booting Windows and Ubuntu can at to the lowest degree help point you in the correct direction.

Method #2: The Avant-garde, Flexible Way

How to install steamos in virtualbox

If you're feeling more adventurous (or want to minimise how much you accept to download directly from Steam), yous can employ the secondary method. In that location are two primary differences between this method and the previous one. For starters, the download is significantly smaller. Part of the reason for this is because once yous install the Os, you lot however demand to download Steam. What you're installing is mostly just a customised version of Debian.

More than importantly, this method has an Expert Install mode. Y'all can use this method to tweak a few settings. That being said, if you're not extremely experienced with Linux distributions and installs, you probably shouldn't mess with this.

To install SteamOS via this method, follow these steps:

  1. Unzip the smaller, SteamOSInstaller.zip file to your USB stick.
  2. Boot your machine from the USB stick.
  3. Select the UEFI entry from the kick card.
  4. Select "Automated Install".
  5. Once the install is finished, kick into the Os. You volition be faced with a login screen. In that location is a default account with both the username and password are "steam". Log in with these credentials.
  6. Double-click the Steam icon on the desktop to download and install Steam.
  7. After this, you tin log in to SteamOS via the login menu you lot used in step 5 (select "SteamOS" via the dropdown box) with the aforementioned credentials.

If you'd like to maintain the Debian installation and log in to SteamOS only when you lot demand information technology, yous can simply end here. However, if you'd like to commit all the fashion, follow Valve'southward instructions hither from step viii in the last section onward to make the final customisation tweaks and so that the sectionalisation is 100 per cent Steam.

Method #2.v: A Note On Virtualisation

How to install steamos in virtualbox

OK, so you've come this far and you're nonetheless non sure you desire to have the plunge. That'south fair. SteamOS is still a beta and it requires a fairly large commitment. If you lot'd still like to give it a shot, you can install SteamOS in VirtualBox. If y'all don't already have VirtualBox ready, our guide hither volition become you lot started.

The process for creating a virtualised SteamOS automobile is a fleck more complicated than the installs to a higher place, but this guide tin can walk you through the process adequately well. It builds on method #2 higher up, though instead of a USB installation, y'all'll create an ISO out of the installer. Proceed in listen, though, that running SteamOS inside a virtual machine will probably issue in some pretty poor performance and almost certainly won't be good for existent gaming. This method is probably best for the idly curious who would just like to fiddle.

Where is the source for SteamOS?

What are the hardware requirements for SteamOS?

  • Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor
  • 4GB or more than memory
  • 500GB or larger disk
  • NVIDIA graphics card (AMD and Intel graphics support coming shortly)
  • UEFI kicking support
  • USB port for installation

How do I install SteamOS?

Warning:

Both of the following methods will erase everything on the target machine. Please ensure you are prepared to remove all content earlier proceeding.

Currently, at that place are two different install methods for SteamOS.

Method 1:

The easiest method is an paradigm-based install using CloneZilla. You volition need to create a SteamOS Organisation Restore USB stick to perform this install. The image provided here requires at least a 1TB disk.

  • Format a 4GB or larger USB stick. Use SYSRESTORE equally the partition name
  • Unzip the contents of SYSRESTORE.zip to this USB stick to create the System Restore USB stick
  • Put the System Restore USB stick in your target automobile. Boot your motorcar and tell the BIOS to boot off the stick. (normally something like F8, F11 or F12 will bring upwardly the BIOS kicking menu).
  • Make sure you select the UEFI entry, information technology may look something like UEFI: Patriot Retentiveness PMAP
  • Select Restore Entire Disk from the Chow carte.
  • System Restore will proceed automatically. When it is complete it will reboot into your freshly re-imaged SteamOS

Method two:

The 2nd method is based on the Debian Installer. Information technology requires multiple configuration steps:

Valve brought on a heavy load in customizing Debian Wheezy (vii.1) to create their ain distro. Their vision with this was to create a centralized gaming center that would house everyone's Steam games and people would be able to share them beyond their dwelling. While currently it but works with Linux games, they aren't leaving Windows backside.

This tutorial serial will cover the SteamOS and all of its gaming fun. The screenshots will be provided via VirtualBox (apparently in 4.0+ y'all tin have screenshots AND record video? Its been mode too long for me), so the quality should exist pretty up at that place.

Prerequisites
Non a fan of this, but since its a distro I'grand not familiar with, I'm going into this every bit blind equally you lot probably are. I accept some ideas what to expect every bit I've seen prior screenshots, just for the most part you'll be learning along with me.

With that said, if something doesn't work for you please experience free to still mail service about it. One distro is virtually the same equally some other.

What Nosotros Need
I started out by having to make the ISO myself. Still, I discovered after the fact there's an ISO pre-made that Steam'due south download page doesn't like to disclose. This tin be found at http://repo.steampowered.com/download/SteamOSDVD.iso (I highly recommend this instead of making one yourself every bit you lot then have to exercise some weird jinjitsu piece of work to boot).

If you're not wanting to install this on an actual machine, you will also need VirtualBox (any other virtualization software is untested by me). I'yard using 4.3.vi for this but I don't meet there beingness any issues as long as its iv.0 or higher.

When creating your virtual machine, its advisable to allocate half your memory (for me its 4GB) to it. If y'all want to Actually use the Bone for its intentions, I'd recommend installing it on a physical machine. Only, for this, it will be fine. As well, gear up the video retentiveness to 128MB and enable 3D acceleration. Information technology helps. Lastly, enable EFI mode, or else the ISO won't boot from previous experiences.

Getting Started – Booting Upward With the ISO and Installing
And then you take the ISO downloaded and attached to your virtual machine, now what? Boot up!

You'll come up with a screen that looks similar this:

Choose "Automated install". SteamOS is intended to exist the only Os placed (retrieve of it equally a media hub of sorts). If you lot desire to effort the expert install I wouldn't mind some feedback on it. Though, its about likely the interactive installer instead of doing everything for you lot.

This will do everything for yous, then you won't have to click through a billion menus and such.

It took me a good 20 minutes or and so with the automated install.

Fresh Install – Booting Up Over again (follow if you're doing this in VirtualBox only)
At present that nosotros have the OS installed, yous'll be presented with this screen:

Pretty cool, huh? Well, we nevertheless have something else to do.

I wish I knew why Valve figured it was expert to presume anybody uses nVidia, but if you boot up right away and so your organization will hang. Instead, at the kicking menu nosotros need to go into rescue manner, purge the nVidia drivers and install the VirtualBox additions.

One time you're in rescue style (terminal/command prompt), enter this:

Nix will output, every bit it merely writes new configuration files to /etc/X11.

Installing the additions requires going to Devices->Install Guest Additions CD image and then typing:

Reboot again by typing the "reboot" command and choose the showtime item in Grub.

Our Beginning Graphical Boot!
Regardless if the mode you're installing, you should now be presented with a Gnome iii environment and Steam updating. I did have a screenshot for this just for some reason it black screened.

After This
Currently, I'm non having much luck in getting information technology to boot upward over again properly.

What happens for me is that if information technology does boot past the UEFI loader, it flashes the boot logo then goes to a black screen. All the same, I'm not certain if this is my own doing or what.

Allow me know if you had better experiences with this, and I'll be trying to set this issue on my end too.

Stephenson'south Rocket – a modified SteamOS installer, with wider support for more than complex computers

The Artist Formerly Known Every bit Ye Olde SteamOSe

SteamOS is now aircraft, in beta form at least, and it'southward all cool and stuff.

Valve have now integrated virtually of the improvements from Ye Olde SteamOSe, such as BIOS and DVD back up, into their installer. You can download it from here.

Stephenson'southward Rocket replaces the Ye Olde SteamOSe projection by building back on Valve's installer with bug fixes and improvements – peculiarly hardware support.

This kind of collaborative evolution demonstrates the ability of Open up Source – and remember, you can contribute to Stephenson's Rocket too! Click "View on GitHub" at the top of the screen to become started, and lookout man the development tutorial video linked below!

  • SteamOS monopolizes drives. Stephenson'southward Rocket can resize NTFS partitions.
  • SteamOS merely supports basic partitions. Stephenson'south Rocket supports LVM and RAID.
  • SteamOS requires a Radeon 5000 or newer for ATI users. Stephenson's Rocket will use the Open up Source commuter instead on older cards.
  • SteamOS requires a Geforce 400 or newer for NVIDIA users. Stephenson'due south Rocket will utilise the legacy 340 series commuter instead on older cards.
  • SteamOS is only updated when Valve have fourth dimension. Stephenson'south Rocket comes with the tools to update information technology with the latest stuff yourself!
  • Back up NVIDIA cards no longer supported in current nvidia-glx driver.

A DVD image is always available at http://stephensonsrocket.horse/

To go started, download the torrent.

Otherwise, clone this repo, and run ./gen.sh .

Installing from a DVD

Just fire the ISO to a blank DVD from your favourite tool, and kicking it.

Installing from USB (Mac)

Open a Final window from the Utilities section of Applications.

Type diskutil list to get a list of devices – ane of them volition be your USB stick (east.g. /dev/disk2 ). Follow the Linux instructions beneath but change:

  • /dev/sdX to /dev/rdiskX
  • bs=1M to bs=1m

Installing from USB (Linux)

Plug in the USB stick and run dmesg ; look for a line like to this:

In this example, sdc is the device proper noun for the USB stick you just inserted. Now nosotros put the installer on the stick, every bit root (eastward.g. use sudo ) run

sdX should exist the USB stick device from the information you lot received from dmesg . Exist certain to use sdX, not sdX1 or sdX2. Then kick into the stick.

Installing from USB (Windows)

Download Win32 Disk Imager and use it to copy the .iso to your USB stick (1GB minimum size).

Once the installer is upwardly.

Pick the "Automated Install" option to wipe the first hard disk in your organization and install SteamOS to it.

For more sophisticated booting – due east.m. dual-boot or custom partition sizes – select the "Practiced" option. Apply of this mode is documented in the back up video here.

Beyond that, simply follow Valve's instructions from their site – Stephenson's Rocket should behave exactly like the real SteamOS, except information technology works on more than systems

Before y'all generate a new paradigm yous need to ensure that your pull is up to appointment as things change chop-chop:

  • git pull in the steamos-installer directory will ensure y'all have the latest code.
  • ./gen.sh -d volition ensure that you download the latest SteamOSDVD.iso

Known issues and workarounds

  • 3D support is broken in Big Moving-picture show Fashion itself and in 32-scrap games in VirtualBox. This is a flaw in the Debian packaging of the VirtualBox guest drivers.
  • Crashes and strange behaviours on NVIDIA Maxwell cards with certain OpenGL games and applications. This requires an update to the lastest driver to set up, which has not even so been packaged for APT.
